Background
Subaru is unique in among automotive manufacturers with a production philosophy centering around all wheel drive and boxer engines. This combination is ideally suited to rally racing, a motor sport at which Subaru has recently excelled.
Rally Heritage
1991 Legacy RS
Before entering the rally scene, Subaru was considered extremely conservative. Beginning in 1984, however, the company began pushing their image towards performance, showing off their all wheel drive boxer configuration in the WRC. From 1984 until 1990, rally performance was lackluster, but things changed in 1990 with the introduction of the Legacy.
With the 1990 WRC season, Subaru turned their Legacy over to Prodrive, a private UK-based team, and the Subaru format proved competitive for the first time. Within three years, Subaru began winning WRC victories.
WRC Impreza WRX STi in Australia
In 1993, Subaru introduced the more compact Impreza rally car, which took second place during its debut event, with the first event victory in 1994. 1995 proved a flagship season for the Impreza, where Subaru took their first WRC makes title. Subaru currently has three makes titles, and is fighting fiercely for their fourth.
