Introduction

This site uses many innovative tools to make browsing and posting as simple and useful as possible. Being one-of-a-kind, explanation for the first-time user is important.

GV Bar

The very top of each page has the GlobalVicinity How-To Pages logo on the left, and your account info on the right. This is where you register, log in and out, access your account settings, and quickly access your homepage.

Navbar

You can search and view your latest page history in the navbar.

Searching

Searching this site is done differently than anything we've seen in the past. Read up on its functionality to get the most out of it!

  • Persistent: Unlike other site searches, there is no page dedicated to displaying search results. Results are always contained within the navbar, and are persistent - they stay there until you type in another search - even when you click a link. This way, to browse search results, you don't have to hit the back button to try another, you simply go down the list of search results in the navbar until you find what you're looking for.
  • Dynamic: Results of your search automatically appear as you type in what you're looking for (notice there is no "search" button to click). This way, to narrow down your search, you simply add words to your search until the results you want appear.
  • Filtered: Turning on and off the search filter lets you search only within the current community (say, the RX-7 community), or the entire GlobalVicinity site.

Page History

Your most recently viewed page history is listed in the navbar to make jumping between pages a snap.

Navbar Tips

  • Try clicking the "float navbar" link - this attaches the navbar to your browser window, hiding it away until you move your mouse over. This is the most useful technique to use, complimenting the persistent search nicely, and letting page content take up the entire window.
  • Another website layout, or "skin", is available to those who prefer larger font sizes. To toggle this skin, click the "switch skin" link.

Content Bar

Below the GV Bar on the right, the content bar tells you what community you're looking at (i.e. "Mazda RX-7"), your current status (public, editor, or admin), how many pages and active members the community has, and of course, contains the main content. You can click the make or model (i.e. "Mazda" or "RX-7") to quickly go back to the community's homepage.

Below each page in the content bar, you can access links to edit the current page and begin a new page within the community.
